“Tring tring tring tring”

Smita heard her phone ringing from the kitchen, paused the grinder and moved out of the kitchen to find her phone. She found it, saw it was her son, Nishant’s call and answered immediately without any further delay.

“Hello.”

“Hey Mom, what took you so long, I called earlier as well.”

Hearing the same old familiar voice brought utter delight on her face, Smiling she continued talking to him.

“Oh, I am sorry, I was in the kitchen…must have missed your call amidst all the grinder noise.”

“Ok, are you alright? You sound out of breath.”

“Yeah, I am fine…just having a little cold.”

“Get that treated and take rest.”

“Yes, how come you called at this hour?”

“I am coming home the day after tomorrow, thought to inform you.”

“Oh, that’s great news, what time will you get here?”

“I will be there by 9:30 in the morning, anyways I have to go now, see you soon.”

“Alright, travel safe son, bye.”

She was suddenly delighted and she felt so much better despite her ill health and exhaustion that it was beyond any words. She was quickly planning preparations for her son’s arrival. Continue reading

An Unlikely Date

“Thanks for the coffee.”

Devika replied in courtesy to the waiter in the coffee shop. She sympathized with the staff there a lot as she felt people didn’t give them their due credit, the staff was always on their feet accommodating unreasonable requests from ever ungrateful customers. Devika frequented this place a lot lately. Like a lot of such evenings, today also she was hopped on her corner table with a book and her coffee for company. She loved reading here specially during monsoons. She had a rough break up a few months ago, after which she did not quite feel ready for the dating game, so her book was her usual date here. “We are going home, right??… or should I turn elsewhere?”

“Yes, you are going home in the other car, I have some work.”

“No ways bhai, I am not allowed to leave you alone today of all days…Mom will kill me!”

“If you don’t do as I say, you will prefer mom’s wrath to mine!!”

Nishant urgently needed to get some peace and quiet, which was impossible to ask in all the festivities surrounding him, more so with him being the center of attention. His younger brother Sahil was a gem of a person with a big heart. But, lately he was acting like an inseparable tail of a dog. Dog being himself.
